City Arts completed the installation of its 2,400 square foot Southwest Gateway mosaic near the Southwest Waterfront in November 2007. Four 300-foot long mosaic sections span the walls of the 12th Street tunnel where it joins Maine Avenue SW, creating a gateway into this transitional area of the District. This community artwork will be seen by thousands of people each day as they commute to work or visit the new baseball stadium.
Funding for the Southwest Gateway Mosaic was provided by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, with additional funding from the Philip L. Graham Fund. The mosaic features images and stylized abstractions of river themes and landmarks associated with this portion of the District waterfront.
