Frederick Douglass Mural

This mural, portraying Frederick Douglass against the backdrop of an American flag, pays homage to one of America's most important abolitionist leaders. Originally located at 12th and Massachusetts Avenue, NW, the mural was covered by the construction of an apartment complex on an adjacent lot in 2002. A sliver of the artwork can be still be seen on the original wall. The loss of this mural highlights the threat posed to public artworks around the city as neighborhoods continue to evolve.
