Matthew Henson Mosaic

Honoring Matthew Henson, the first African-American explorer to reach the North Pole, this mosaic greets visitors to the Matthew Henson Earth Conservation Center in Southwest Washington, DC. A portrait of Henson overlooks an image of the 1909 North Pole expedition, led by Robert Peary, while in the distance figures surround the American flag that Henson planted to mark the occasion. Around his neck hangs the National Geographic Society's distinguished Hubbard Medal, which was awareded to Henson posthumously in 2000. Created in partnership with the Corcoran's ArtReach program, the mosaic represents the combined design of seven students from the Duke Ellington School for the Arts and Woodrow Wilson Senior High.
